Barriers to improvement or modification of current protocols can hinder progress in healthcare organizations. These barriers may arise from the existing organizational culture, which can make it difficult to implement changes in company policies. Nurse leaders play a crucial role in advocating for policy changes that positively impact nursing units and patient care. They have firsthand knowledge of the issues affecting the hospital through their communication with staff.

Safety culture encompasses both safety and culture within an organization. It is influenced by internal and external factors. External factors, such as the openness and accessibility of administration, can determine the extent to which change can be implemented. However, administration itself can sometimes act as a barrier to change by prioritizing benchmark and joint commission scores to maintain satisfactory ratings and secure grants. Administrators often view the hospital as a business, with numbers and financial status being the primary focus.

Security is an integral part of safety culture in any organization. By embracing safety culture, organizations can mitigate the negative impact of external factors on the workplace environment. Nurse leaders must rely on their values and attitudes that promote health and safety at work to overcome barriers and advocate for improvements.

However, the perception of administration not receiving input on workplace safety issues can leave nurse leaders feeling powerless. It is essential for nurse leaders to address concerns such as patient falls, low staffing, and other safety issues to administration in order to find effective solutions.

In conclusion, nurse leaders play a crucial role in advocating for change and improving safety culture in healthcare organizations. While barriers may exist, effective communication and collaboration can overcome these obstacles, leading to better patient care and a safer working environment.
