1. Describe what happens when light strikes a photoreceptor. Include the effects on photopigments and the release of the transmitter by photoreceptors.

2. Discuss the different types of pain, pain receptors, and pain fibers and stimuli for pain.

3. Explain the differences between Broca’s, Wernicke’s, and conduction aphasias and how they support localization of function in language processing. In your response, make sure you clearly identify the language deficit(s) associated with each aphasia type, as well as the underlying dysfunctional neuroanatomy.

4. Identify the subdivisions of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Explain how these two systems result in the brain communicating with the body.

5. Explain both sides of the debate regarding the use of animals in biological research. In your response, provide at least two arguments supporting each side.

6. Explain two advantages that arise from humans having gyri and sulci in their cerebral cortex rather than it being smooth.

7. List four major types of human brain scanning techniques and provide one advantage and one disadvantage of each.

8. Compare and contrast the roles of the cerebellum versus the basal ganglia in movement.
