Topic Selection

For my project, I am considering the following two topics:

1.     Indian Removal Act/Trail of Tears

2.     Haitian Independence

Indian Removal Act/Trail of Tears

I decided to choose the topic related to the Indian Removal Act and the Trail of Tears because it is one of the painful episodes in the history of the United States which demonstrates the negative impact of expansionism and racism. Trail of tears refers to the forced relocation of Native American tribes from southeastern United States to the west of the Mississippi River which caused many of them to suffer and die. In choosing this topic, I will examine the reasons that led to the signing of the Indian Removal Act, the plight of the tribes that were affected, and the resultant effects on the Native American tribes. An exhibit on this topic shall throw light on how Native American cultures have survived through the many adversities and struggle for their rights.

Haitian Independence

Haitian Independence is a good topic because it is an extraordinary and revolutionary period in the history of slavery and colonization. The Haitian Revolution that culminated in the independence of Haiti and their liberation from French colonial masters in 1804 is also a good example of the struggle for liberty and sovereignty. I find this topic engaging because it focuses on the concept of resistance and the extent to which Haiti played a pivotal role in the fight against slavery. A Haitian Independence exhibit would focus on the events that led to the revolution, the key players and the repercussions of Haiti becoming the first black nation. This exhibit would help unravel colonial history and understand how the Haitian Revolution impacted other struggles for emancipation.

These topics not only have engaging historical content, but also raise considerations about themes of oppression, survival, and struggle for justice.
