Now you’ve learned about the social contract: a philosophical concept that suggests that citizens in a society give up the least possible amount of their individual rights and freedoms in exchange for services and protection from the government. In this discussion, you’ll have a chance to put your knowledge to work, roleplaying as the chief of the Atlanta Police Department.

This is important for policing as citizens in society want to be protected from others who would do them harm, but also don’t want to have their privacy and rights infringed upon by police. This creates a complicated situation where citizens will not be happy with their local police if crime is increasing OR if they feel their rights are being infringed upon by the local police.

Steps To Complete

Start a thread in this discussion topic and answer the following questions. Remember to answer the questions pretending to take on the role of chief of the Atlanta Police Department.

  1. What powers and resources do you think your officers need to uphold their social contract obligation to keep the community safe?
  2. How would you prevent your officers from abusing their powers while carrying out their mission to keep the community safe?
  3. In social contract terms, do you think it is possible for your agency to achieve and maintain a balance between keeping the community safe and not using power in ways that infringe upon the rights and freedoms of the citizens? Why or why not?

Please upload your initial discussion post as a new thread in the discussion forum no later than 11:59 pm Friday. You will need to respond to two of your classmates no later than 11:59 pm Sunday.

Ill do the response to two others
