part A (2.3 Discussion: Police Organizations) Why This Discussion?

Now that you’ve learned about police organizations, it’s time to apply what you’ve learned while acting again as the chief of the Atlanta Police Department. Since police chiefs are expected to make evidence-based decisions as police leaders, consider what evidence from the course might support your choices. Where applicable, include citations for any research or evidence evidence that backs up your choices.

Steps to Complete

Start a thread in the following discussion, and answer these questions in the role of the Chief of Atlanta Police.

  1. What will the organizational form of your department be and why? For example, will it be a very centralized organizational scheme with most decisions coming from your office and using the traditional quasi-military structure and a lot of bureaucracy?  Or will it be a more de-centralized structure?  If so, how?

2.What kind of people do you want to recruit to be police officers in your department?  Based on the categories discussed in course materials on iCollege, what would be your minimum standards be?  And why did you set each standard you list?

3.Briefly describe the system you would use to evaluate the performance of officers on the job, how it would prevent misconduct etc.  Also talk a bit about how you’d organize your department’s structure, hiring process and promotion system to try to fight the negatives of police culture such as cynicism, the code of silence, low morale etc.

Part B.Discussion 3: The Warrior Gene For this discussion, please watch the video titled “Can Your Genes Make You Violent?” by BBC Ideas. After watching the video, address the questions below:

1. What is the “Warrior Gene?”

2. How has the Warrior Gene been used to explain aggression?

3. What role does the social environment play in the expression of the gene in individuals with low MAOA?

4. Which do you think plays the most important role in the development of aggressive behavior – our genetics, our social environment, or the interaction of our genes and social environment (genes x social environment), and why?
