Week 2 Citation Assignment

This week we are going to practice Bluebook citations and look at the quality of sources.  Below are several random sources.  They are also in the attached Word document.

Please write the correct Bluebook citation for each source and identify whether the source is peer-reviewed or not.  You should also note whether you think it’s a good source to use in an academic setting or identify what you might use it for.

Opinion analysis: Court rules (narrowly) for baker in same-sex-wedding-cake case [Updated]

Now, find and list the correct citation for the following:

Bosse v. Oklahoma (US Supreme Court)

Graves v. Shoemaker (VA Supreme Court)

Virginia law on tort liability of hospitals___________________

W3: 1.  Find 2 peer reviewed articles and 2 regular articles on a legal topic of your choosing.

     · Research@APUS is the library’s one-stop-shop for all things research.  (Always come back to it because it continues to expand.)  It has a very helpful whole section on Library Sources; check it out! The library will save you much frustration and time if you take some time to get to know it well.

     · We also have many helpful FAQs that delineate between different types of sources and how to access/research them in the library.  For example:

o What does peer reviewed mean?

o How do I find peer reviewed or scholarly articles?

o How do I find a “popular” article?

o How do I search for law review articles?

2.  Create a research log detailing how you found the articles.

You must use: (a) the Online Library’s Nexis Uni, and (b) at least two other websites listed in the Legal Studies Research Guide.  (See Announcements for more information.)  A sample research log is attached for your convenience; please follow it as you do your best to learn how to create your own such log.

3.  Pick one article that interests you.  (You can choose whatever legal topic that you like!)  Write a report on that article. The report must be a minimum of 2 pages long, double spaced, and must contain footnotes in Bluebook format.

4.  Turn in both the research log and the essay.  Notice that there is a rubric in the Evaluation & Feedback section of this Assignment area.  Before you begin your work, open that rubric and take a close look at it.  The closer you come to meeting (or exceeding) the standards outlined in the “Exemplary” column within the rubric, the higher your grade will be here.  That’s why it’s so important to review the rubric before you start working on your assignment!
