Paper length: 1,500-2000 words. Include a word count at the end of your paper.

Correct spelling, grammar and punctuation are expected. There are no specific requirements for font size, spacing or margins.

The paper must draw on required course materials and may also use the optional readings in the Modules, as well as other sociological sources, such as journal articles, book chapters. Notes from class can also be used with an in text citation.

References and citations: a bibliography or works cited page must be included. Any recognized referencing system can be used (APA, MLA, Oxford, etc.) so long as it is used consistently throughout the paper. All materials used in the paper (both directly quoted and paraphrased) must be cited in the body of the paper (author, year of publication, page number/s), as well as listed in the bibliography/works cited. 

To receive at least a passing grade, you must:

  • use at least 2 required course materials (readings/recordings)
  • include a minimum of 5 sources total
  • include full citation details in the paper (author, year of publication, page number) when quoting directly or paraphrasing
  • include a Bibliography or Works Cited page with full details of all sources used, including class notes/Powerpoints. Sources should be listed in alphabetical order based on author’s last name
  • meet the minimum word count (1500 words)

Grading Rubric

90-100% 

  • The paper demonstrates that the author fully understands and has applied concepts learned in the course. Concepts are integrated into the writer’s own insights. The writer provides concluding remarks that show sophisticated analysis and synthesis of ideas.
  • The topic is focused narrowly enough for the scope of this assignment. A thesis statement provides direction for the paper, either by statement of a position or hypothesis.
  • In-depth discussion & elaboration in all sections of the paper. Paper is not simply descriptive, but also demonstrates sociological analysis.
  • Ties together information from all sources. Paper flows from one issue to the next without the need for headings. Author’s writing demonstrates an understanding of the relationship among material obtained from all sources.
  • No spelling and/or grammar mistakes. Clarity of expression.
  • Cites all data obtained from sources. Chosen referencing system used in both text and bibliography.
  • Meets all other minimum criteria for a passing grade.
