Weight: 25% of your final grade

Length: 1000 words

Due: Upon completion of Unit 2

Instructions

This assignment requires you to do two things:

  1. Create a table—found in the first section of Unit 2 of the Study Guide—that charts the development of labour in the global cotton industry, including different divisions of labour, forms of control of labour, causes of discontent, and types of workers’ collective power.
  2. Drawing on the information in the table, Sven Beckert’s book Empire of Cotton, the Unit 2 commentary, and your reading notes, you should explain your table in an essay. The assignment should be more analytical than interpretative. This means that you use the theoretical concepts introduced in Unit 1 to filter out key empirical information in the book and present it in a table. The essay should explain why the information you chose is relevant and what can be learned from it.
