Food digestion is a process that everyone experiences but can be different for each person, depending on what the individual’s diet looks like. This process begins with the chewing of food in the mouth and ends in the small bowel where nutrients are absorbed for the body’s use. Digestion time depends on the content of the food that was eaten, as foods that are in higher protein and fats tend to have a longer transit time. The average amount of time food spends in the stomach is 40-120 minutes, where it then travels to the small intestines and spends another 40 to 120 minutes (Cleveland Clinic, 2024). Fruits and vegetables have a decent transit in the digestive system due to the high water and fiber content in this food group, taking approximately one day to completely move throughout your system. Grains like cereal and lunch sandwiches have the quickest transit time out of any food group, being approximately 15 minutes. Whole grains such as brown rice tend to take a bit longer to breakdown then other grains due to their high fiber content and make you feel energized for longer. A food group that satisfies the body’s energy requirement for longer is meat and proteins. Due to the intricate protein and fat bonds in these foods, the digestive system takes longer to break them down. The transit time for proteins and fats is anywhere from 1-3 days, hence the sustainability of slow-releasing energy from foods in this category. Like whole grains, they also provide a feeling of satiety for longer after consuming the meal. Having a balanced diet is important for providing the body with the necessary nutrients and encouraging a healthy digestive system. While incorporating a well-rounded diet, the body takes on average 24-72 hours to fully digest food. This includes the average 6 to 8 hours it takes food to move from the stomach to the small bowel (Lovegrove, 2024). Nutrition from all food types is important for our overall digestive health and should be considered when making meal choices.
