Investigators are required to use a range of different techniques when they are trying to solve a domestic violence case. Domestic violence cases often come with unique challenges, particularly when clear evidence is lacking. Behavioral analysis is critical during a domestic violence case. Investigators can assess how the suspect and victim behave during interviews and can provide insight into coercion, fear, or deception. According to Osterburg and Ward, “an investigator must carefully evaluate behavioral cues, as suspects may exhibit deceptive tactics while victims may display fear or reluctance due to trauma” (2013). The investigator should study their behavioral patterns, when they are with both parties and on their own. Ongoing abuse patterns can be identified through past police reports, protective orders, or 911 call history. Investigators can witness statements from neighbors, family, or co workers, to provide context. Investigators can also ask paramedics or police officers, at the scene, to describe the victim’s immediate physical and emotional state. Investigators can use crime scene evidence to indicate a struggle. Forensic science can be used to help identify and document injuries, even if they are not obvious to the eye. Trained professionals can identify subtle signs of strangulation. In 2020, a person was convicted after strangulation was proven. Using forensic nurses’ assessments, medical imaging, and the victim’s recorded statements made during an emergency call, investigators were able to put Smith behind bars in the case of
People v. Smith (2020). By integrating forensic science and digital footprints this case was able to be solved. Investigators can use digital footprints, such as threatening or angry texts, emails, calls,as coercion or intimidation. Recordings, logs from security systems, or smart speakers, have been used in cases to corroborate or refute allegations. Many times, victims will be scared to come forward due to retaliation, financial instability, or emotional ties to the abuse. Investigators can use trauma informed interviewing and connect the victim to helpful resources to try to help their participation and gain their trust. Investigators must rely on a range of techniques to build a substantiated case while addressing victim reluctance and conflicting testimonies.
