Moonlight is a classic example of a character study. In 
Moonlight, Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney (based on McCraney’s unpublished play), avoid a strict narrative structure by showing the evolution of Chiron, the main character, at three points in his life. Jenkins and McCraney craft the episodes to explore the film’s themes (which include masculinity and sexuality) and through Chiron’s relationships.
