A)    Explore a toy (either at a store or online) that is appropriate for early childhood use (for ages 3-6). Respond to the following questions:

  1. Identify and describe the toy (include any features that might make it attractive to the child or contribute to its play value).
  2. What age(s) is the toy intended for play?
  3. What domains of development (cognitive, physical, and/or social) is the toy intended to stimulate?
  4. Does the toy make use of fine motor skills and/or gross motor skills? If so how?
  5. Describe any safety concerns with this toy.
  6. If you were a parent is this a toy you would purchase for your child? Why or why not?

B)  Chapter 10 discusses Baumrind’s four types of parenting styles which vary in control and emotional responsiveness. Respond to ALL of the following:

  1. Identify the four parenting styles and describe their characteristics.
  2. Indicate a possible outcome for the child of each of the parenting styles.
  3. Share, as you feel comfortable, the type of parenting style(s) you perceive your parents/caregivers endorsed.
  4. How do you think their parenting style affected your personality and behavior?
  5. If you are a parent, or if you were to become a parent, would you have the same parenting style(s) as your parents/caregivers? Why or why not? Reply even if you never intend to have children.
