Part A-Our text states that the ASCA National Model focus has “shifted from the services provided by school counselors to viewing school counseling as an integral program that supports, but is also distinct from the school’s academic curriculum” (p. 7). Read the assigned chapters in our textbook, the ASCA National Model (2019), and the section on appropriate and inappropriate activities for school counselors.

Discuss why it is important that the school counselor’s role go beyond academics and be considered distinct. Additionally, examine how this separation may or may not be consistent with your experience with school counselors. This discussion is not meant to be and should not be a critique of any one school’s program but an understanding of the intent of the ASCA National Model. Cite your textbook as well as the ASCA National Model (2019).

. Initial posts are to be at least 250 words in length and well-written using proper grammar.

Part B-Essay: The Necessity of Standard

Complete this week’s readings and write at least a 500-word essay about the importance of standards in school counseling. The purpose is to assist you in understanding the knowledge and skills required to be an effective school counselor and the challenges you will face.

The introductory paragraph must state why it was necessary to create standards for the role of a school counselor in the schools. In the body paragraphs, you will list the CACREP School Counseling Specialty Area Standards (found on page 20 of the textbook) and The ASCA Standards for School Counselor Programs.

For each of the standards listed, you must address how knowledge of these will impact you as a better school counselor and professional. You must respond to each standard individually. Finally, write a summary paragraph of any standards you would like added to make you more effective.

The essay must be formatted using APA and include a title and reference page. Cite references to the textbook as well as the CACREP and ASCA standards. See below for the required format of the essay:
