Kolbert, J., Crothers, L., & Hughes, T. (2022). Introduction to school counseling: Theory,
research, and practice (2nd ed.).

● Chapter 8: “Consultation and Collaboration”
● Chapter 9: “Academic Development”

Part A-Discussion: Engaging with Students

Review the Discussion Requirements for this course before responding to the prompt
below.

Three main topics are involved in the format for lessons within the Student Success
Skills meetings with school counselors:

● Cognitive skills, including memory strategies, setting goals, and progress
monitoring

● Social skills, including conflict resolution, social problem-solving, and
teamwork skills

● Self-management skills, including anger management, motivation, and career
awareness.

Select one of the skills reported to you to be deficient for a particular student. Discuss
how you will connect with that student by using an introduction that simulates the child’s
attention and expresses the rationale for change that will benefit them. Examine in your
discussion how and why it is important to present in a manner that is not seen as a
punishment to go to the school counselor’s office. Finally, what steps will you present to
the student for follow-up, and how will you, as a school counselor, follow up with the
student?

Part B-Slide Presentation: Presenting to
Stakeholders
Engaged school counselors are critical partners in providing information to students for
their futures, helping families navigate the educational system, and supporting teachers
and staff in maximizing student learning. One of the primary activities of an engaged
school counselor is sharing their professional expertise.

This assignment allows gaining experience presenting information at teacher/school
counselor in-service parent meetings and providing reports to school boards or other
stakeholders.

Create a slide presentation of at least 15 slides. Start with an introductory slide that will
grasp the attention of the participants, then create a well-organized agenda to present
information from one of the following topics:
