Setting
Discussion: Counseling Theories in an Academic Setting

Review the Discussion Requirements for this course before responding to the prompt
below.

One might argue that the purpose of the school is to educate students academically.
However, numerous social/emotional factors interfere with students’ ability to learn. The
school counselor’s role is not to teach an academic subject but to teach ways to
improve academically.

Discuss the use of individual and group counseling theories that can be utilized to
improve learning in the classroom. After examining the chart on page 108 of your
textbook labeled “Factors Associated with Client Outcomes,” discuss why client factors
are the most labeled as impacting outcomes. Include what the school counselor needs
to consider about the student before determining which individual counseling techniques
to use 250 words

Part B-Essay: School Counselor Vision
Learning is enhanced if we can reflect, review, and personally relate to the material we
are learning. This assignment will allow you to reflect on and assess your personal and
professional growth as a pre-service school counselor.

For this essay, you will (1) demonstrate a thorough understanding of the role of the
school counselor and (2) demonstrate the ability to self-analyze personal development
and processes that have promoted growth.

Write at least 750 words outlining your beliefs on student achievement. Utilize the
numerous characteristics of students we have studied thus far and include the following:

● Develop a vision statement for a school counseling program that exhibits your
vision of the identified needs. Describe the purpose and importance of your
vision for student learning.

● Using the theories addressed in Chapters 6 and 7, determine which theory
you more closely align with that will help you develop ways to assist students
in enhancing their learning ability in the classroom.

● Summarize how your vision of being a school counselor would improve
student and school outcomes. Include how you will measure this as though
you were presenting it to your principal, families, and other administrators.

● Although there is no specific number of outside resources required, include a
reference page with the textbook cited and any other resources showing
evidence for your vision.

● The paper must be formatted in APA.
