In this module, you learned about the importance of building strong relationships with your students and the significance of social-emotional learning (SEL) in the K-12 classroom. For this discussion, choose one specific element of building relationships with students and explore how it connects to and supports social-emotional learning. Some elements of relationship building to consider include:

  • Establishing trust
  • Creating a positive classroom environment
  • Active listening
  • Showing genuine interest in students’ lives
  • Providing individualized support
  • Celebrating student achievements

Discussion Prompt:

Choose one specific element of building relationships with students and explore how it connects to and supports social-emotional learning.

  1. Identify and briefly describe the relationship-building element you’ve chosen.
  2. Explain how this element specifically supports one or more of the five core competencies of SEL (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision-making).
  3. Provide a concrete example of how you might implement this relationship-building element in your future classroom to promote SEL.
  4. Don’t forget to cite 1 academic source!
